How to Clean Checkered Vans?

  • I cleaned the sole of my van-checkered shoes by tapping the cloth on the shoes except for the sole part.
  • Secondly, I put toothpaste on the toothbrush and started to scrub the sole part of the shoes.
  • I placed my footwear in the solution of detergent and warm water.
  • I started to wash the stained part of the shoes with a brush.
  • After cleaning them in warm water, I left them in a warm place for drying.

Things You Need

To perform this procedure, you have to gather some household items. Luckily, I didn’t have to go to the nearby market because everything was already present in the house.

Here is the list of material that was needed:

  • Toothbrush or sponge(I used a toothbrush because I think it is more effective but a sponge is also not bad)
  • Warm Water
  • Toothpaste
  • Dishwasher soap
  • Wet cloth or wipes
  • Mild or laundry detergent
  • A Sharpie
  • Tape
  • A bowl
  • Fabric

Steps to Clean Checkered Vans

Step 1. Sole Cleaning

I picked up my checkered shoes and removed the dust from them by knocking them again and again. When I realized that the dust is removed, I took these shoes and placed them on the table. You can either put them on any flat surface.

Then I tapped the upper and lower sides of the shoes with fabric. In this way, the toothpaste will remain only in the sole part and will not reach other parts. I suggest taping them twice for effective results.

Now I filled the bowl with a container and picked up my toothbrush. I soaked my toothbrush in hot water and then added a little toothpaste to the brush.  After that, I started to scrub my shoes gently.

Scrubbed its top side first, then the left and right sides. When I scrub them the first time, they didn’t clean fully, So I repeated the same process 4 -5 times.

Now I clean the paste by using a wet cloth. You can also use wipes if you have those. I removed the tapes from their top. Then I moved to the next step.

Step 2. Cleaning the Upper Side

For washing the white van’s upper side, I poured some water into the bowl. Make sure that bowl is large enough to fit your black and white slip-on vans. The water was high enough to submerge my shoes into the bowl entirely.

Then I added dishwasher soap to the water-filled bowl and mixed them. I held the brush in one hand and the shoes in the other hand then I began to brush the vans-checkered slip-on. Now I rubbed them in a circular path to remove the stains completely.

I preferred putting little pressure on the parts where I felt dirty stains. Remember to put enough pressure and don’t rub them hard.

Its color could fade so I brushed it only 12 to 15 times. I also brushed their sole one more time.

Step 3. Washing Off

I placed my white van slip-on under the sink and opened the tab. I moved my shoes in all directions to clean the soapy area. To make them more shiny and sleeky, I made a cleaning solution of water and laundry detergent in the container.

I used baking soda that was mixed in water to clean the shoelaces and shoe eyelets. Now I washed them separately and then dipped the toothbrush in that mixture and started to scrub.

I picked up my magic brush again and soaked my shoes in that solution. I tended to brush again so my shoes look new again.

Step 4. Drying them Off

It was time to wrap up all the things. I put my shoes under the sink again and moved them in a circular direction.

By doing this, all the detergent was removed and my van shoes were shining brightly. I didn’t put them in direct sunlight for drying. I put them in a shady place and waited for two days to dry them completely.

Step 5. Damage Control

This step is optional. It means it is your choice if you wanna do it or not. If you are frustrated because your shoe color has faded, you can decolorize it using a sharpie.

Make sure to color only the middle part of the square checked vans. The color of my checked shoes didn’t fade so there was no need to perform this step. You can also skip it if you want.
